Anger management- Part 2

As promised in the previous article, here are the reasons why we should control anger proactively.

Lord Buddha said that “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die”. In Sinhalese, we say that “blood becomes impure” when we get angry. We realize how true these sayings are when we consider the effects of adrenaline- the hormone which shoots up when we are angry. For our ancestors in the jungle, this was beneficial when they saw an animal; the burst of energy that followed would enable them to fight or flee from the scene. 
However, if you’re chronically angry or stressed out, adrenaline can take a heavy toll on you.
 

  • Since our muscles need the maximum amount of Oxygen and glucose they can get, the blood flow to other systems is reduced. This would result in digestive problems such as indigestion, gastritis, loss of appetite,etc

  • The liver would send more and more glucose to the bloodstream. If this is not used up, diabetes is just around the corner.

  • The liver also sends more of the long term energy source, cholesterol, to blood. These bratty molecules will nestle in your arteries, especially in the thin ones in the heart and the brain, forcing you to welcome heart attacks and strokes. Don’t forget highblood pressure, tachycardia and arrhythmia

  • Did you know that right now, a pre-cancerous cell could be forming in your body? Luckily, Natural Killer cells (NK cells) can destroy these. Since there is more probability for the skin to get damaged during a fight, the immunity system would focus on the exterior of the body. Therefore the dreaded “c” word, cancer, is a possible consequence too.

  • Excessive adrenaline can also cause a host of other discomforts such as headaches, migraines and pulmonary edemas.

      When we consider the long term effects of anger, WE are at more danger than the victims of our anger. Are YOU willing to pay the price?
 
The brain is a wonderful creation. You can train it to give you a positive chain of thoughts during frustrating situations. The following table could help you for that. A mere glance at only the first and the third column just before you go to sleep and just after you wake up could do wonders to your peace of mind.

Nails In The Fence

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.”

The little boy then understood how powerful his words were. He looked up at his father and said “I hope you can forgive me father for the holes I put in you.”
“Of course I can,” said the father.


My sincere wish is that, for the sake of your own health and for the sake of your loved ones, you will think twice before bursting out in anger.

  1. I love the story! The first half of it was told to me when I was really small. And it is true that anger does help us realize certain things. But we much get rid of our anger in the least harmful manner. If we are hurting others, or even our selves, then it is time to cool down. And it could be in any way; the nails or counting to ten before you say something. Either way, its always best to have your emotions in check, because when we aren't in our right senses we end up doing things we later regret.
